The joint statement by Presidents Putin and Yushchenko must be signed by all the sides involved in the negotiations on Transdniestria conflict settlement and not only by two sides, head of state told a press conference on Wednesday.
The statement has certain positive elements, like the statement that the Transdniestrian issue can be solved only on the basis of Moldova’s integrity and sovereignty. “I find this statement very important in the context of the attempts to use Kosovo pattern in solving Transdniestria conflict,” head of state said. It is very important that the democratization of the region from the left bank of the Dniester is regarded as a method of solving the conflict, President Vladimir Voronin emphasized.
“We welcome Russia’s position regarding the change of the current peacekeeping mission into a mission under OSCE mandate. According to their statement, this change will occur only after the settlement of the conflict. But this contradicts the Moldovan law on the status of Transdniestria. Still, we greet this change in Russia’s position and hope official Kremlin will keep on moving in the same direction,” Voronin said. Transdniestria’s status will be decided only after the demilitarization of the region and the change of the peacekeeping mission into an international mission. Otherwise no form of status will be accepted, the head of state told. The official Chisinau does not agree with the present makeup of the peacekeeping mission but it is not possible to change it unless the mission passes under OSCE mandate, he added.
Chisinau will never give up the negotiations on the Transdniestrian issue, which will mean “to abandon Transdniestria”, Moldovan President stated. We will solve this issue only at the negotiations table. The talks became more constructive and dynamic after enlarging their format and cannot be compared with the negotiations conducted until 2002, Voronin concluded. - Reporter.MD
