The Transdniestrian issue will not be solved if Chisinau sticks to its position, Russias Foreign Minister Serghei Lavrov said.

“As long as the official Chisinau insists on solving the Transdniestrian conflict according to Moldovan leaders’ position, on the basis of Moldova’s legislation, neglecting the previous initiatives on conflict solving, I cannot see any chance of making progress,” Serghei Lavrov told after the meeting with the Czech Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda on Tuesday.

It is impossible to solve this conflict when there is no dialogue between the two sides that would be recognized by the international community, including the OSCE, Lavrov said.

Moscow’s and Chisinau’s positions on the format of the peacekeeping mission in the Transdniestrian region differ greatly. While Moldovan officials want to make the mission international Kremlin is for the maintenance of the current format until the settlement of the conflict.

Russia’s position has recently received backing from Ukraine, after President Victor Yushchenko had signed together with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a joint statement on Transdniestria conflict settlement.

The Moldovan authorities did not react to this statement. Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Stratan says Moldova’s position “is being formulated” and will be made public next week. //
