Moldpress - Chisinau, Moldova

The Transnistrian political elite is obviously oriented towards confrontation with Ukraine. The Tiraspol presidential official body - The Pridnestrovye - has published a brief notice about Ukraine's alleged accession to NATO, titled Voluntary Madness. The article quotes Russian officials criticizing the Ukrainian policy.

The Russkiy Rubej newspaper, which is the body of the Union of Russian Communities in Transnistria, has gone even further. The newspaper quite often takes over articles from the Proriv and Noviy Dnestrovskiy Kuryer ? which are controlled by the Transnistrian state security ministry. On Saturday, 12 November, the Russkiy Rubej published a photomontage presenting the Georgian president dressed as Adolf Hitler, and Ukrainian and Moldovan heads of state, Viktor Yushchenko and Vladimir Voronin, dressed as nazi field marshals.

Finally, the mouthpiece of the Obnovlenye movement, backed by the Sheriff company, ran into the joint choir of the official direction. Eager to collect points among the Russian-minded retirees, Obnovlenye has worked out an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling for sending "Russian and international observers" to monitor the election for the Transnistrian supreme soviet. The appeal describes as revoltingly double-faced" Ukraine's position on the matter, as it does not intend to recognize the election.

The conclusion arises by itself: the short affair between the Transnistrian elite and Kiev is coming to an end. Day X, when Tiraspol, as a matter of fact, had to say "no" to Viktor Yushchenkos plan, has already come, and the further events, certainly, will only strengthen Igor Smirnov teams international isolation, and it will not depend on whether the Kremlin sends any observers at the 11 December parliamentary elections.
