Another round of five-party consultations with the ultimate purpose of settling the dispute over Moldovas separatist Dnestr region is held in Odessa. The parties involved are Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Transdniestria and OSCE.
Moscow is still pushing for revival of the full-fledged five-party talks. We hope, in Odessa, it will be decided at last to start negotiations between Chisinau and Tiraspol for the large-scale settlement of conflict,? the RF Foreign Ministrys spokesman Valery Nesterushkin said September 26, 2005. Meanwhile, Chisinau doesnt appear to be too eager to canvass the conflict in format that would be pleasing to Moscow but advocates involving Washington, Brussels and Bucharest. Ukraine backs up Moldova, of course.
President of the self-proclaimed Dnestr region Igor Smirnov expressed his views also on Monday. Smirnov told local Olivia-Press he had invited the United States and EU to participate, as he doesnt doubt they will be of benefit. They have amassed great experience in settling regional conflicts: Serbia's and Montenegros confederation, proposals on Cyprus and Kosovo. All those could be of use,? Smirnov specified. Having reminded of Cyprus and Kosovo, Smirnov made in clear that although he has agreed to meet Chisinau and Kiev half-way in respect of negotiations extension, he still crosses out any chances of the Dnestr banks reunion.
