Mihai Ghimpu, the acting president of Moldova (elected Friday after Vladimir Voronin stood down), was in a meeting on Saturday with Amangeldy Zhumabayev, ambassador to Moldova and Ukraine for Kazakhstan. The Kazakh diplomat says he thinks Transnistria should return to Moldovan sovereignty when he stated:

Amangeldy Zhumabayev"Due to Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the OSCE, which starts on January 1, 2010, we plan to make every effort to help solve the problem of Transnistria."

He also said that "Kazakhstan supports the principle of Moldova's territorial integrity" and "Kazakh-Moldovan relations will follow an upward trend in all spheres, including trade and economic affairs."

Ghimpu said the Transnistria situation "is an internal matter of the Republic of Moldova."
