MOSCOW. (Interfax) - NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the alliance applauds the recent agreement on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia.

"There has been very promising progress on these issues recently, with the joint statement signed last month by Foreign Ministers Lavrov and Zurabichvili, and I am hopeful that remaining issues can be resolved very soon," de Hoop Scheffer said in an interview with Interfax ahead of his visit to Moscow on Friday.

The end of negotiations on Russia's bases in Georgia and the withdrawal of Russia's military property from the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniestria are keys to ratifying the adapted Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty, he said.
