The Russian Foreign Ministry believes that ignoring the upcoming referendum in Moldova is political shortsightedness.

"It is hardly right and sage in contemporary Europe to ignore, and, more so, show no respect for such a way of people expressing their will," a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's web site reads.

"Statements alleging negative consequences for prospects of settling the Transdniestrian conflict distract attention from the main issue: the necessity to normalize the environment for Transdniestria's foreign economic activity, which Russia has been calling for," the statement reads.
