The negotiations about the problem are underway in Tiraspol and Chisinau in the 5+2 format (Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Transdniestria, the OSCE and observers from the USA and the EU).
As a commentary by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said, Ukraine is actively cooperating
with Russia, as a state-guarantor and mediator in the process of Transdniestrian
settlement. Such cooperation resulted in a joint statement by the Ukrainian and
Russian Presidents, which demonstrated the two states readiness to promote the
efficacy of the negotiating process in the said format. As the statement said,
such a move must promote "forming a climate of trust" during the negotiations
and "cooperation with the OSCE, the EU and the USA in the constructive dialogue",
with a view of reaching settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict through the
plan, which was offered by President Viktor Yuschenko. The Ukrainian plan, which
was backed by all participants in the negotiating process, is based on principles
of democratization, demilitarization and decriminalization of Transdniestria.
