Russia has expressed in favour of the territorial integrity of Moldova in the process of Transnistrian settlement. Such a stand was taken by Valerii Nesterushkin, official representative of the Russian Federation in framework of consultations on Transnistrian problem in Odessa held on October 18.

Besides Russia, a firm and unanimous support for the idea that the conflict must be solved by observing the principle of territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova was manifested also by others mediators - Ukraine, Russia, OSCE and the observers - European Union, USA. This was stated by the US State Secretary, David Kramer, during the meeting with Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin.

Before the consultations in Odessa, Russia was the only country that qualified the referendum on independence held in Transnistria as one "that in perfect compliance with international legal norms ". In particular, the Russian State Duma requested the Russian authorities "to guide Russian policy by the result of the will expressed by the people of Transnistria ".
