Moldova's disputed territory of Transnistria hopes Russia to recognize its independence, the same as it did in regards to South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Transnistrian President Igor Smirnov's press office told RBC today. The breakaway region's leader congratulated the peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on their recognition by Russia, saying he was sure that Transnistria would follow the precedent set by Georgia's enclaves in the near future. Despite the West's powerful political and military pressure, as well as misunderstanding and open hostility from certain former Soviet republics, Russia has stopped the war and the genocide of the Ossetian people, Smirnov stated.
