The referendum on independence for Transdniestria will be a landmark event for the authorities of the breakaway republic, Russian Foreign Ministry Special Envoy Valery Nesterushkin said.

"By all appearances, it would be an important social and political landmark for the Transdniestrian authorities," Nesterushkin told Interfax on Wednesday.

Tiraspol will use the results of the referendum in order "to show that it has its own position which many have tried to disregard," he said.
