Head of the Central Elections Commission in the breakaway republic of Transdniestria Pyotr Denisenko told Interfax on Sunday that the presidential elections there were valid as over 50% of registered voters had cast their ballots by 4 p.m. He said the commission did not have exact figures but early returns indicated that about 52% of voters had visited polling stations. He reminded Interfax that at 3 p.m. the turnout had been 47.5% and during one hour approximately 5% voters had cast their ballots. "In rural districts the turnout is 60% and more. In the last few hours voter activity has grown in the cities of Tiraspol and Bendery approaching 50%. Clearly that by now overall turnout has exceeded 50%," he said. Denisenko said that more exact figures will be known as at 6 p.m. A total of 263 polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time. The voting will come to an end at 8 p.m. According to updated reports, there are 394,000 voters in Transdniestria. There are four candidates for the position of Transndiestria president, including incumbent president Smirnov, member of the Transndiestria Supreme Council Pyotr Tomaily and two journalists: editor-in-chief of the opposition Novaya Gazeta newspaper Andrei Safonov and editor-in-chief of the communist Transdniestrian Pravda newspaper Nadezhda Bondarenko. ml www.interfax.ru
