CHISINAU. Dec 7 (Interfax) - Russia will not withdraw its troops from the Moldovan
breakaway region of Transdniestria before "the final stage of settlement"
of the Moldovan-Transdniestrian conflict, the Russian ambassador to Moldova said
on Wednesday.
"If Russian forces leave Transdniestria, it would mean a return to 1992 [the
year fighting was going on between Moldova and Transdniestria] ," Nikolai
Ryabov told reporters in Chisinau.
"Russia is ready to withdraw its forces from Transdniestria. However,
this will happen at the final stage of settlement of the Transdniestrian problem,"
he said.
