President of the breakaway Transnistrian Moldovan Republic Igor Smirnov has called upon Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider the possibility of providing humanitarian aid to Transnistria consolidating Russia's peacekeeping mission in the republic.

The economic blockade has led the region into a deep crisis with losses having reached $37m as of March 19. Based on statements made in recent talks with Moldova and Ukraine, as well as their western partners, no improvement is foreseen for the situation in the near future, and hence "Tiraspol relies on Moscow's help and support", Smirnov stated in his letter.
