The Transnistria conflict is not only an internal problem of Moldova, but also a threat to security throughout Southeast Europe, Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister Victor Osipov said today.

"Our eastern areas are under the authority of unconstitutional regime, and this is a big problem for the country," Osipov said.

According to him, this conflict situation creates problems for the country's security.

"The administration of Tiraspol is armed and continues to strengthen its security forces. They took a tough stance against Moldova's constitutional authorities," Osipov said.

Osipov noted that Moldova needs EU's support and the country is interested in peace and calm situation on its borders.

"It is essential that the conflict did not become a burden to Moldova and not become a barrier to the country's development," he said.

"Negotiations on the political solution to the problem were interrupted in 2006, while the meeting in the "5+2 " format, which is informal, continues.  Five such meetings have been held since last November," Osipov said.

Osipov said a military peacekeeping operation should be replaced by a multinational civilian, completing the withdrawal of the Russian military forces and ammunition from the territory of Moldova.
