Only international recognition of Transnistria may be a guarantee against any measures of pressure on the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, reads the Appeal of an extraordinary congress of the Transnistria Ukrainians to the government of Ukraine. The congress, held in Tiraspol two days ago, was attended by nearly 600 delegates who urged the Ukrainian leadership to recognize the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic as a subject of the international law, to give up any measures of economic pressure on the republic, and to strictly abide by the provisions of the 1997 Memorandum. The document also said that the new customs rules, imposed on March 3 by Ukraine, have inflicted serious damage to the Transnistrian economy, and are fraught with unpredictable consequences to the entire Transnistria where dozens of thousand citizens of Ukraine permanently reside. Chairman of the Union of the Transnistrian Ukrainians Vasily Protsenko voiced regret that Kiev has not only failed to condemn the blockade actions by Chisinau but even took the Moldova's side overtly, and that the new customs rules are bringing financial losses to Ukraine, too: the Vinnitsa, Nikolayev and Odessa regions of Ukraine may lose their trade turnover with Transnistria constituting some $270 million a year, and Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises may lose orders total worth $50 million. Serious damage is likely to be sustained by Ukrainian railroad companies and the Odessa seaport. Ukrainian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Moldova Peter Chaly read out President Victor Yushenk'saddress to the Transnistria Ukrainians saying that "Ukraine shares the compatriots concern but shall not revise the new border regime". The Ambassador stressed, "Transnistrian enterprises must get registered with Moldova, must legalize their activities and work in conformity with international rules, rather then destabilize situation on the border". www.infotag.md
