This unrecognised country is known by many different names, or rather different spellings of the same name in English: Transdniester, Transdniestria, Transdnistria, Trans-Dnestr, Transnistria and at least half a dozen more. All of these spellings refer to the fact that the region is beyond the Dniester River.

It should be noted that many Moldovans simply refer to the region as "Stinga Nistrului" (Left Bank of the Nistru) rather than giving it a proper name, which some people feel is intentionally done to belittle its importance in their minds.

In Transdniester itself it is usually known by its Russian name Приднестровье, Pridn'estrov'ye or Pridnestrovie, which is a shortened version of the full title Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika – this is often seen written as the initials PMR.

You may also find references to this region being called MRT (by the European Court of Human Rights, for instance), which stands for Moldavian Republic of Transdniestria.
