Tiraspol is the capital city of the self-declared independent region of Transnistria, according to the local government it has a population of around 200,000. Even though Tiraspol is the largest city in Transnistria, it is not exactly a hive of cool and happening events. There are few things to see, though one might enjoy the main street with its parliamentary building, a relatively new Lenin statue, a tank from the independence war and various other items of Soviet memorabilia and banners dotted around the place. Tiraspol has many different light industries, such as the manufacturing of furniture and electrical goods. The easiest way to get to Tiraspol is by bus from the capital city of Moldova (and Transnistria depending on your viewpoint), Chişinău. It is sometimes possible to hire a car, but be prepared for longer delays at the border checkpoint if you decided to do this. |
